The Power of Community: How Camp Koby & Josef Fosters Post-Traumatic Growth
/By Jonathan Nierman, US Executive Director, Koby Mandell Foundation
Earlier this month, in the quiet, green surroundings of Kfar Pines in Northern Israel, the air was filled with a sound that once felt impossible: children laughing, singing, and simply being kids. For the participants at Camp Koby & Josef, spanning third graders taking their first steps into grief support to high schoolers navigating adolescence alongside profound loss, this summer session represented far more than a traditional getaway. As Israel’s premier bereavement camp, Camp Koby & Josef serves children and teens who have lost a parent, sibling, or immediate family member to terrorism, war, or sudden tragedy, offering a sacred space where deep heartbreak meets unconditional embrace.
When a family experiences catastrophic loss, a child's world fractures into "before" and "after." In the painful aftermath of October 7th and amid the ongoing war, countless young Israelis are carrying unprecedented levels of trauma, grief, and uncertainty. Whether in elementary school or on the cusp of adulthood, the emotional weight can be crushing and deeply isolating. Camp Koby & Josef was created to break that isolation, building a living bridge between deep personal trauma and renewed community strength by surrounding these youth with peers who truly understand their journey.
The Power of Shared Understanding Across Ages
At Camp Koby & Josef, connection happened naturally across age groups because no child had to explain their pain. Last week’s program brought together youth from every corner of the country and every walk of life – secular and observant, urban and rural. The multigenerational camper community created unique opportunities for organic healing: high schoolers naturally stepped up as compassionate older siblings, showing the younger third and fourth graders that joy and hope were still attainable. Through carefully structured therapeutic programming and group reflection tailored to different developmental stages, campers engaged in moments of personal transformation.
Post-Traumatic Growth and Peer-to-Peer Healing
As our organization looks toward long-term institutional stability and scaling our impact, our programmatic focus has deepened. Healing from severe trauma across such a wide age range requires moving beyond immediate crisis response toward sustainable, evidence-based models of Post-Traumatic Growth. This summer, our team integrated cutting-edge therapeutic techniques designed specifically to foster peer-to-peer healing, woven seamlessly into a mix of fun, traditional summertime activities. By blending these relaxed, joyful moments with age-appropriate, trauma-informed psychological processing, we created a safe environment where an 8-year-old and a 17-year-old alike could process complex emotions at their own pace without clinical pressure.
The Strength of Collective Impact
None of this transformative work happens in a vacuum. The success of last week’s camp stands as a powerful testament to what becomes possible through collective philanthropic support. It takes an ecosystem of dedicated clinicians, counselors, and visionary partners like the Mayberg Foundation to sustain this vital sanctuary. As we lay the groundwork for our upcoming 25th anniversary and build long-term sustainability, the commitment of our philanthropic partners enables us to expand our reach, enhance our therapeutic models, and ensure that no child in Israel navigating sudden loss ever has to walk through the darkness alone.
The Koby Mandell Foundation was established following the 2001 murder of 13-year-old Koby Mandell and his friend Yosef Ishran by terrorists in the Judean desert. Today, the Foundation helps bereaved mothers, fathers, children, and siblings rebuild their lives after losing an immediate family member to terror, war, or sudden tragedy. Through Camp Koby & Josef, year-round peer support groups, multi-day healing retreats, and specialized psychological counseling, The Koby Mandell Foundation transforms shared grief into Post-Traumatic Growth and long-term emotional resilience for thousands of Israelis across the country.
