Mapping the Path to Professional Growth for Jewish Outreach Professionals

The Mayberg Foundation’s professional development pilot has moved from theory to practice, pioneering a framework for long-term flourishing. Facilitated by project manager Stephen Markowitz, the initiative maps the career life cycle of Jewish outreach professionals from entry through year 20. By defining a "best-case" path rather than focusing on systemic problems, the program prioritizes both professional growth and the practitioner's spiritual wellbeing.

The project is organized around four dimensions of a vibrant career:

  • Confidence: Cultivating a healthy, grounded sense of self.

  • Competence: Identifying evolving skills required at each stage.

  • Motivation: Understanding the internal drivers that sustain long-term engagement.

  • Relevance: Strengthening the connection to a larger purpose.

Stephen is currently engaging veteran leaders in a series of deep-dive interviews, ensuring the resulting "shared arc" is shaped by the field's most seasoned voices. These insights address unique challenges, such as navigating professional and religious identity and balancing personal communal ties with professional demands. The findings will be presented at a wider practitioner gathering in June, ensuring those on the front lines have the support they need to help authentic Jewish life flourish in the contemporary world.
